Watch Two Key Metrics--Improve Profit

Growing brokerage businesses operating with a high level of sustained performance consistently have net-income at 3.5% to 4% or higher. Admittedly, net income is a pretty sensitive thing to disclose, but in a recent survey of our industry barely a quarter of respondents reported net income greater than 3%.

Two key metrics are revenue per employee and gross margin (brokerage) per employee. Simple to calculate (revenue/margin divided by total number of people employed) and simple to monitor (you can do it daily). Getting your numbers above industry average for your size company will drive your net income above average as well.
